Hoos Wins!

This year’s Hokies v. Hoos Food Fight saw UVA collect more total food and funds to secure the 2010 victory. But the biggest victory is the hunger that will get vanquished thanks to the resources raised to provide 63,811 meals for local individuals and families. This year, some area schools even got into the mix, most notably James River High School who contributed over 4,000 pounds to the food fight. Whether you’re a high school Hoo wannabee or a hope-to-be Hokie, a dedicated alum, or just a friend of hunger relief, you’ve helped us at a time of year when food collections can drop and attention can wane from the very real problem of hunger.

Fighting hunger takes a comprehensive approach:

Acquiring and distributing food for those who need it most

Our Food Distribution Center gets food to people in need across the region.  We solicit donated food from manufacturers, retailers, the public and others.  We also purchase foods at efficient costs to ensure a ready supply of the healthiest and most-needed items.  We then provide the food to more than 500 partner agencies who offer feeding programs, child and adult care centers, homeless shelters, and emergency pantries in 31 counties and 5 cities in Central Virginia. <more>

Nourishing children with healthy and reliable food

From hot, healthy meals to well-rounded snacks and access to food over the weekend, we feed children so that they have the foundation of good nutrition necessary for growth and development. Our Full Futures feeding programs serve:

  • Evening meals during the school year by preparing and delivering Kids Cafe dinners to established after-school programs in the Richmond and Petersburg metro /areas
  • Weekend backpacks delivered to children at risk of hunger in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield schools
  • Summer breakfasts and lunches to meet the need when many children don’t have access to school meals
  • A pilot school pantry to give children and their families immediate access to food in crisis situations

Healthy Food Initiative Ensures Good Nutrition for Those who Need it Most
For several years we have had a healthy food initiative in place that focuses our efforts on procuring and distributing the most nutritious balance of foods for the hungry, particularly children and the elderly. Our emphasis on produce, for example, has resulted in a 5,000% increase since 2003 in the volume of fresh fruits and vegetables distributed. In the area of protein, we aggressively seek out peanut butter, canned meats, and other quality sources.

Community Drop Sites Make Contributing Food Convenient
We have many community food collection sites to make it even easier for donors to contribute nonperishable food for the hungry. The sites are listed here.
