We Use Two Primary Methods to Fulfill our Mission:

WAREHOUSE PROGRAM

Our warehouse program solicits donated food from manufacturers, retailers, the public and others. This food is then distributed through our more than 500 partner agencies to disadvantaged individuals in feeding programs, child and adult care centers, homeless shelters, and emergency pantries. <more>

KIDS CAFE PROGRAM

Our Kids Cafe Program is a partnership with established after-school and summer programs in the Richmond Metro area that provide safe places for children to participate in activities designed to enhance educational and social development. Our Community Kitchen utilizes “rescued” foods to prepare and then deliver nutritious meals to our 50+ Kids Café sites. We provide as many as 3,000 meals on weekdays during the school year and as many as 4,000 meals daily during the summer months. There are also Café for Kids sites that receive snacks only. <more>

Healthy Food Initiative Ensures Good Nutrition for Those who Need it Most

For several years we have had a healthy food initiative in place that focuses our efforts on procuring and distributing the most nutritious balance of foods for the hungry, particularly children and the elderly. Our emphasis on produce, for example, has resulted in a 5,000% increase since 2003 in the volume of fresh fruits and vegetables distributed. In the area of protein, we aggressively seek out peanut butter, canned meats, and other quality sources. And one reason we're building a new Community Kitchen (see left) is so we can utilize much greater amounts of healthy fresh foods available for donation from grocery stores and others.

Community Drop Sites Make Contributing Food Convenient
We have many community food collection sites to make it even easier for donors to contribute nonperishable food for the hungry. The sites are listed here.
